Very true, magic does always win vs. anything (except stronger magic). But as far as guns go, the AK is a familiarly reconized gun, as compared to a random magic staff. The only reason why many peoples know about the MP44 is because COD had it in their WW2 game as the STG 44, in full-auto only (as compared to togglable semi/full auto). Gun was also used to make the A280 (I think that's what it's called) in the SW films. One can be seen in rebel hands during the hoth battle.
