It doesn't behoove him for the general populace to think he's dead, as long as the people in charge of looking for him still knew he was alive. What a circus, it's as if he needs to be drummed up as some sort of villainous creature right out of a Disney movie in order to be bad. His wife apparently rushed the SEAL.

He was a deeply religious man who took the actions that he did for religious purposes. They had to bury him at sea so people wouldn't worship his body.
Sure doesn't sound like a martyr to me.
