um actually the ati 9800 was far better than any of nvidia's 5 series...
the X series is what failed because the X700/X800 lacked Shader Model 3.0, whereas the 6600GT and later all supported it on the Nvidia side.
Keeping in mind -- the problems could very well have been manufacturer based. There are plenty of brands of each model of course...
Oh don't get me wrong the 9800 performed great, it just didn't last as long as most other cards I have owned have.
And lacking Shader Model 3 didn't really matter to me since I pretty much only play reborn boss Academy lol.

Years later, I bought a 2400 Pro when I thought it was failing and later found out that the X800 was still a better card. I bought the 2400 on the cheap just to get my computer working again, so it wasn't like I was trying to upgrade. Cool thing is that I still have both cards and they both still work well enough on my other computers. BTW, turns out it was the RAM and not the x800 failing.
I have an 8800GTS currently and it's still fairly beastly....probably will wait for a whole new build to get another one.

p.s. - Pretty sure the card before my x800 was the MX440....lol
p.p.s - My laptop is pretty beast but it has a 200M, so it barely plays JA.
Yeah its beast, but I think its not for me atm. Its kinda hard and will be uncomfortable for me as a student although the price is pretty perfect. What you knwo about gateway? Should I look for sony?
I am kinda choosy :/ and I want a good laptop with a design I like. And so far only Sony, Gateway and HP have the best looking I wont buy HP as you said they are crap. So Sony and Gateaway are at the top. I read that no one have achieved such a good quality of video so far as Sony did. Is it true?
I actually have never heard any complaints about Gateway, and they have been around for like ever, I would imagine they are a safe bet.
If you wanted a beast video card and setup you can get one of those Dell gaming laptops, but I'm under the impression those are more of a desktop replacement?
All I'll say is that I had a Sony VAIO for 3 years, and used it A LOT, and no problems, ran JKA perfectly, it was MY stupidity that broke it. But even up until now, I dropped it twice and it had not a dent nor sound.

Ok I didn't read this thread until now, but DJ, that Gateway laptop is pretty damn good. My IRL friend has it and loves it. He can run Crysis on very high. I have the older version and am really happy with that.
